Privacy Policy for Focus AI

Last Updated: June 24, 2025

Your privacy and trust are the foundation of Focus AI. We designed this extension with a "privacy-first" and "local-first" approach. This policy explains what data we handle, why we handle it, and how we keep you in control.

Our core promise is simple: We do not store your browsing history. We do not sell your data. We only access the minimum information needed for the extension to function during an active focus session.

The TL;DR - The Most Important Points

  • Your data stays on your computer. All your settings, task history, and statistics are stored locally in your browser. We do not have a remote database of user information.
  • We only analyze pages during a focus session. The extension is dormant and does not monitor your browsing when you are not in an active session.
  • We don't track who you are. Our analytics are anonymous and focused on feature usage (e.g., "a session was started"), not on you personally.
  • You are in control. You can see, modify, and delete your data at any time.

How the AI Analysis Works (The Core Feature)

To intelligently block distracting websites, Focus AI needs to understand the context of the page you are visiting in relation to your stated task.

What We Send for Analysis:

During an active focus session, when you visit a new webpage, we send the following information to Google's Gemini AI API:

  • Your current task description (e.g., "Write a report on Q3 marketing").
  • The URL of the webpage you are visiting.
  • The first ~500 characters of the page's text content.

Purpose: This information is used only to get a "yes" or "no" answer from the AI on whether the page is relevant to your task.

Data Retention: This data is processed ephemerally by Google's standard API policies. We do not log or store this information ourselves. Your task descriptions and the content of the pages you visit never touch our servers.

Analytics: How We Improve the Extension

To understand how our features are being used and where we can improve, we use a tool called PostHog for anonymous usage analytics.

What We Track:

We track anonymized events. These are actions, not personal data. Examples include:

  • focus_session_started
  • focus_session_ended
  • ai_block_triggered

What We NEVER Track in Analytics: We never send your task descriptions, the websites you visit, or any personally identifiable information to our analytics service.

Payment & Subscription Information

We use a third-party service called ExtPay to manage premium subscriptions. When you choose to upgrade, ExtPay handles the payment process securely. Focus AI only receives your payment status (e.g., "trial" or "paid") to unlock premium features. We do not handle or store your credit card information.

Data Stored Locally on Your Computer

Focus AI stores all of your settings and history directly in your browser's local storage. This data includes:

  • Your Settings: Your custom allow/block lists and your focus schedule.
  • Your Active Session: The description and timing of your current task.
  • Your Statistics: Your total focus time and a history of your last 10 completed tasks.

Because this data is stored locally, you have complete control. Uninstalling the extension permanently deletes all of this data.

Chrome Extension Permissions Explained

We only ask for the permissions needed for Focus AI to work correctly:

  • storage: To save your settings and history on your computer.
  • tabs & <all_urls>: To check the URL and content of a page only when a focus session is active.
  • notifications: To let you know when a session ends.
  • declarativeNetRequest: To perform the actual blocking of websites on your block list.

Your Rights & How to Control Your Data

  • Access: You can view your statistics and settings within the extension's options at any time.
  • Modification: You can change your allow/block lists and other settings.
  • Deletion: You can clear your task history manually. Uninstalling the extension removes all associated data permanently.
