Privacy Policy for Focus AI

Focus AI ("Focus AI", "we", "us") is a browser extension that helps you block distracting websites based on the task you are working on. This policy explains, in full, what personal and other user data we collect, how and why we handle it, where it is stored, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have. We have written it to be specific rather than vague, because vague privacy policies help no one.

1. Data We Collect

We collect the following categories of data. We do not collect your name, your full browsing history, your IP-based location for tracking, your contacts, your financial account numbers, your health data, or any special-category personal data.

a) Website content (only during an active focus session)

• The URL of the page you are visiting.
• A short excerpt of the page's visible text (about the first 500 characters).
• The task description you typed for the current session.

This is collected only while a focus session (or the always-on Identity Shield) is active. When no session is running and the shield is off, the extension does not read page content.

b) Email address (optional)

If you choose to enter your email during onboarding or at upgrade, we collect and store it. You can skip this and still use the extension. We use it only as described in Section 2.

c) A random installation identifier

On install, the extension generates a random identifier (a UUID) that is not derived from and cannot be traced back to your identity. It lets us count installs and link your own usage events together without knowing who you are.

d) Usage and product events

We collect anonymized events about how the extension is used, for example: a session was started, a session ended, a page was blocked, the upgrade screen was shown, or an upgrade was completed. These events may include the random installation identifier and basic counts (such as how many sessions you have started). They do not include your task descriptions or the websites you visit. Session recording is disabled.

If you arrived via one of our ads or a creator referral link, a referral or click identifier and a referral code may be passed from our landing page to the extension and included with these events for attribution. These identifiers are not your personal identity.

e) Payment status (if you upgrade)

If you purchase a subscription, our payment provider (ExtPay, which processes payments through Stripe) handles the transaction. We receive only your subscription status (for example "trialing" or "paid"). We never receive or store your card number or full payment details.

f) Uninstall feedback (optional)

If you uninstall the extension, your browser opens a short feedback page. The random installation identifier, the extension version, and your session counts are included in that page's address so we can understand churn. If you choose to fill in the optional survey (including an optional email and comment), those responses are sent to us. The survey is voluntary; closing the page sends nothing beyond the address parameters just described.

2. How We Use Your Data

We use the data above only for the following purposes, all of which serve the single purpose of providing and improving Focus AI:

• Website content is used solely to obtain a relevance decision (block or allow) from the AI for the page you are on, in the context of your task. It is not used for anything else.
• Your email is used to send you product and onboarding emails (for example a welcome message, focus tips, and occasional updates), to respond to you, and to unlock access where your account or a granted free pass applies. You can unsubscribe at any time.
• The installation identifier and usage events are used to measure feature usage, understand the product funnel, decide which improvements to build, and (for ad/referral identifiers) attribute installs to the campaign or creator that referred you.
• Payment status is used to unlock premium features.
• Uninstall feedback is used to understand why people leave and to improve the product.

3. How and Where Your Data Is Stored

Stored locally on your device

The following is stored in your browser's local and sync storage on your own device, not on our servers:

• Your allow lists, block lists, and focus schedule.
• Your current session (task description and timing).
• Your statistics and recent completed-task history.
• The random installation identifier and local preferences.

Stored on our servers

The following is stored on our infrastructure, which runs on Cloudflare (Workers and the D1 database):

• Your email address, if you provided one.
• The random installation identifier and associated usage, attribution, and subscription-status records.
• Uninstall survey responses, if you submitted them.

Website content is not stored. The page URL, text excerpt, and task description used for AI analysis are processed in transit to produce a decision and are not written to our database or logs.

4. How Your Data Is Shared (Third Parties)

We do not sell your data and we do not share it with data brokers or advertisers. We share specific data with the following service providers strictly so they can perform a function for us:

• Google (Gemini AI): receives the page URL, text excerpt, and task description during a session to return the block/allow decision. Processed under Google's API terms; not used by us to build a profile of you.
• Cloudflare: hosts our server (Workers) and database (D1) where email, the installation identifier, usage records, and uninstall responses are stored.
• Resend: our email delivery provider, used to send the product emails described above to the address you provided.
• PostHog: our analytics provider, which receives the anonymized usage events and installation identifier.
• ExtPay / Stripe: process subscription payments and return only your subscription status to us.

We may also disclose data if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users or Focus AI. If Focus AI is ever involved in a merger or acquisition, we will notify you before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

5. Data Retention

• Website content for AI analysis: not retained; processed in transit only.
• Email, installation identifier, usage and subscription records, uninstall responses: retained on our servers until you ask us to delete them, or until they are no longer needed for the purposes above.
• Locally stored data: remains on your device until you clear it or uninstall the extension, which permanently removes it.

6. Your Rights and Choices

• Access and portability: you can view your settings and statistics in the extension at any time, and you can request a copy of the data we hold about you by emailing us.
• Correction and deletion: you can edit your lists and settings in the extension. To delete the email and server-side records associated with you, email [email protected] and we will delete them.
• Local data: clearing the extension's data or uninstalling it permanently deletes everything stored on your device.
• Email opt-out: every email includes an unsubscribe link, and skipping the email field means we never collect it in the first place.
• Regional rights: depending on where you live (for example the EEA, UK, or California), you may have additional rights to access, restrict, or object to processing. Contact us to exercise them.

7. Browser Permissions We Request

We request only the permissions Focus AI needs to function:

• storage: to save your settings, lists, and statistics on your device.
• tabs and host access (https://*/*): to read the URL and a text excerpt of the page you are on, only while a session or the Identity Shield is active, so the AI can decide whether to block it.
• webNavigation: to detect navigation to blocked pages and the browser's extensions page (anti-tamper) during a session.
• notifications: to notify you when a session ends.
• access to extensionpay.com: to manage your subscription through our payment provider.

8. Children's Privacy

Focus AI is intended for users aged 13 and older (and is popular with students). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

9. Security

Data sent between the extension, our servers, and our service providers is transmitted over encrypted HTTPS connections. Our server data is hosted on Cloudflare's infrastructure. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your data and we minimize what we collect in the first place.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. When we do, we will revise the "Last Updated" date above, and for material changes we will provide a more prominent notice. Continued use of Focus AI after an update means you accept the revised policy.
